Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly form of cancer. However, if you catch it early, you stand a better chance at surviving longer as shown here. Let’s summarize at the signs & symptoms of mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure can cause this cancer several years or decades after the first exposure.
Mesothelioma can be hard to diagnose because the signs & symptoms sometimes look like other ailments, and sometimes the symptoms are very subtle and hard to detect. Sometimes, symptoms are ignored or dismissed because people attribute them to ordinary illness. Patients might live with the disease for half a year or more before they’re ever aware that they have the disease and get properly diagnosed.
After being diagnosed myself I have had to come to terms with the disease. I have also contacted a mesothelioma law firm here in Tampa where I live called the CG law firm. They have been a tremendous help, and although nothing helps cure this disease, it is a relief my family won’t be burdened by financial bills.
More than half of patients diagnosed with a form of mesothelioma called pleural mesothelioma get lower back pain or chest pain in their side, and there are often reports of shortness of breath. Fewer numbers of people could experience trouble swallowing, have an ongoing cough, fever, weight loss, or general tiredness. Further symptoms that some patients could experience include muscle weakness, coughing up blood, arm and facial swelling, and voice hoarseness. It’s easy to see why some of the more common symptoms could easily be mistaken for something else. It’s important to get tested by a specialist just in case.
Asbestos exposure is considered the main risk facto fro the development of mesothelioma. A doctor should evaluate anyone who was previously exposed to this dangerous chemical, and is exhibiting symptoms that could be attributed to mesothelioma. Your primary care doctor will refer you to a specialist for testing if he believes you are at risk of the disease. The average latency period for the disease is 35 to 40 years. That means that people can get exposed and not show symptoms for 40 years.
